− | Labour should make an offer to all possible parties it can work with in forming an anti-Tory, anti-austerity alliance: in England: the Green Party (1 MP) and the Liberal Democrats (8 MPs); in Scotland: the Scottish Greens (2 MSPs), including the 3 Independent MSPs close to it; in Northern Ireland: the nationalist but Labour-allied SDLP plus the non-aligned NI Greens, NI21, Alliance and Independent Unionist MP Sylvia Hermon; in Ireland: the Labour Party, the Social Democrats, the Socialist Party, and the dozen or so left-wing Independents. An offer to Sinn Fein, the SNP and Plaid Cymru would be natural, but due to their hardline approach to secession, problematic. |

Revision as of 09:46, 15 March 2016
The Government of the Provisional Republic of Great Britain is one of many Governments-in-Exile based in the Western Hemisphere in the USA's sphere of influence.
The government was headed by Aneurin Bevan from 1945 until 1959, when he was replaced by Tom Driberg (to 1974), Ian Mikardo (to 1979) and Tony Benn (from 1979).
The Government of the Provisional Republic planned a re-organisation of Britain and Ireland into a Federal Republic, consisting of a Northern and Southern Ireland, federated but not reunified, Wales, Scotland and England, subdivided into eight regions (London, Anglia, Mercia, Northumbria, Yorkshire, Wessex, Cornwall and the Channel Isles). This position was challenged by the British Monarchist Government-in-Exile, organised around Queen Margaret after 1952.
The Republic is divided into 43 regions (Southern and Northern Ireland, Lowland and Highland Scotland, Wales and 38 county-shires of England. The historic nations (Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Cornwall), as well as former crown dependencies (the Channel Islands plus the islands of Mann, Shetland, Orkney, etc) all have special status. The regions range in population from c.500,000 to c.2,000,000. The most populous regions are Greater London, Scotland, Southern Ireland, Wales, Greater Birmingham, Greater Manchester, Greater Sheffield, Greater Newcastle, Greater Leeds, Northern Ireland, Hampshire, Kent, Essex, and Greater Liverpool. The least populous are the Channel Islands, Cumbria, Bedfordshire, Wiltshire and Warwickshire.
