Nepal resolved some long-standing irredentist claims by annexing, at the invitation of Great Britain, a substantial part of the Indian Raj, including the whole of the Princely State of Sikkim. Sikkim is now treated as a subsidiary principality of Nepal.

The position of head of state (monarch) and head of government (premier) are both hereditary, held by the Shah and Rana dynasties respectively. The two families are substantially intermarried: the current queen is a Rana by blood.
