Haile Selassie Gugsa

1887 (Tigray, Abyssinia)

Soldier and politician

A great-grandson of the Abyssinian Emperor Yohannes IV and widower of a daughter of Emperor Haile Selassie I, Haile Selassie Gugsa defected to the Italians in 1935 during the Second Italo-Abyssianian War.

A decade later, Prince Haile Selassie Gugsa was the Chief Native of both his own district (Tigrai) and of Italian East Africa as a whole. He died in 1976.

Haile Selassie Gugsa was implicated both in the death of his wife in 1933, and in the events of Yekatit 12, 1937, which saw the end of high-level resistance to the Italian occupation.
